Observation start time: 10:00:00
Observation end time: 12:00:00
Total observation time: 2 hours

Official Counter: Mary Carnahan

Observers: Bob Johnstone, Carol Parafenko, Keith Sealy

Visitors:
Thanks to Bob Johnstone, Mary Carnahan, Carol Parafenko and Keith Sealy for
today's count.

Weather:
Conditions were cooler than the last few days, with overcast skies and
hardly any wind at all.

Raptor Observations:
Not a great flight today with only 6 birds. The single Northern Harrier and
lone Sharpie were seen at Sharpie Alley, while the Red-tails (2),
Red-shoulder (1) and TV (1) were all seen to the north.

Non-raptor Observations:
Thanks to Carol and Bob for their contributions to today's non-raptor list,
which is great, given the weather with gloomy conditions and rain
threatening throughout the watch. Observers noted the usual species
(Robin, Goldfinch, Blue Jay, Chickadee, Cedar Waxwing, both Kinglets,
White-breasted Nuthatch, Ring-billed Gull, Northern Cardinal, Dark-eyed
Junco, White-throated and Song Sparrows, Downy, Red-bellied and Pileated
Woodpeckers, Canada Geese and Mallards) and Hermit Thrush. There were a
few unusual species as well. Near the gate that is south of Sharpie Alley,
Bob found a bunch of sparrows including a Lincoln's Sparrow, our only
reported sighting this fall, while at the south end of Hawk Cliff Rd.,
Carol got a picture of an Oregon Junco, the only reported sighting of that
species at Hawk Cliff this fall. In the second hour, a Green Heron was
seen at the ridge. The big surprise for the day was a single hummingbird
that sped across the field headed westward. The feeling was that it was a
Ruby-throated though this was difficult to confirm as the bird never
stopped. This is very late for a hummingbird and for RT Hummingbird the
latest previous date noted in the "The Birds of Elgin County" is October
20th.
