Observation end time: 15:30:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter: Jenna McDermott

Observers: Bob Hall-Brooks, Bob Pettit, Claude Radley, Paul Pratt

Visitors:
No visitors today, but Bob, Claude, Bob, and Paul had the pleasure of
meeting the two miniature snowmen on the tower, and enjoying the first
proper wintry weather of the season. Thanks for joining me!

Weather:
As someone who enjoys thinking of the approaching winter, today was a
wonderful day, though many would disagree, with snow and flurries lasting
almost the entire time. The temperature fluctuated just above and below 0C
and there was a thin layer of ice coating the small pond to the SE of the
tower that only melted at the end of the count. Winds came from the west
all day except for a very short period of north winds in the final count
hour.

Raptor Observations:
Two immature Northern Harriers hunted side by side for a few minutes until
each decided the other was too close and they got into a small scuffle
before heading west. Red-tailed Hawks were our most abundant raptor of the
day with 20, many of them flying acceptably close to the tower. A Merlin
was seen hunting in the forest to the east but never migrated.

Non-raptor Observations:
Quite a good movement of birds despite the snow. Perhaps that is what
brought a flock of 19 Snow Geese through! They were flying in formation
with 1 Canada Goose mixed in. Tundra Swans put in another good effort today
with 135. A few other birds of note were the Mourning Dove that briefly sat
on the tower railing, a Downy Woodpecker that was drumming on phragmites
rather than trees, two groups of over 100 American Robins, 120 Common
Redpolls, and 427 American Goldfinches! See today's eBird list

Predictions:
A cool day like today with winds from the west at 15-20km/h and a mix of
sun and clouds.
