A moderate west wind held all day. Raptor Observations: Our flight was moderate and dominated by red-tailed hawks. A sub-adult golden eagle passed nearly overhead during the second hour and another bird was seen well out over the lake to the south about an hour later. In the afternoon, a rough-legged hawk teetered between bouts of gliding high above Gibraltar's canals. Non-raptor Observations: Tundra swans were seen regularly with probably less than 100 viewed by us. There were two horned grebes and at least two common loons feeding off-shore. As a "swing" counter and not regularly at the watch site, I have little to gauge the relative volume of waterfowl in the distance in Lake Erie compared to recent days. There were easily 5,000 seen from our vantage point. A flock of approximately 50 pine siskens was around the watch-site. Flocks of horned larks and a few American pipits flew overhead. Predictions: Today's weather will be served tomorrow (with perhaps a southerly component to the west wind) before some snow forecasted for tomorrow night. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
