Preliminary impression from today's Christmas Bird Count in Oakville and
western Mississauga was lower than usual numbers of expected birds.
However some previously reported birds were easily relocated
specifically the Painted Bunting on Arkendo Road and five species of
Warbler (Yellow-rumped, Nashville, Wilson's, Orange-crowned and
Tennessee) were present on the east side of the Water Treatment Plant at
Sedgewick Park were present throughout the day. The Snowy Owl at Bronte
Harbour was also relocated.
There were multiple reports of Raven including one I saw fly off the
Lake landing at Appleby College (private property) and another at Orr
and Clarkson Roads in Mississauga.
One of the better birds of the day was a Gray Catbird found east of
Winston Churchill in Mississauga that will need to wait for a separate
report. Sorry Bruce I forget the details (long day).
Directions
Arkendo Drive is the first road west of Winston Churchill in Oakville. I
saw the bird around 1pm in a tree above a cedar hedge at 33 Arkendo.
Sedgewick Park can be reached by exiting QEW at Third Line then going
south to Hixon and east to the end. Once there park and walk
south-easterly to the chain link fence by the sewage treatment plant and
look for the birds.
