The 38th annual Burk's Falls CBC, in the eastern section of Parry Sound District (along Hwy 11 Corridor between Burk's Falls, Sundridge and Magnetawan) was held on Thurdsday, December 18 in much warmer weather conditions than last year. The 22 participants and 4 feeder watchers observed a total of 37 species consisting of 1798 individual. Average for this count.
Highlights include 1 - Northern Goshawk - first since 2007 1 - Rough-legged Hawk -- only 8th time on count - very little open habitat 2 - Snowy Owl - the first time on this count due to lack of fields 28 - Downy Woodpecker - ties the highest count record from 1992 15 - Gray Jay - 3rd highest ever. In the period 2007 to 2013 averaged 4.5 individuals 34 - Red-breasted Nuthatch - lowest since 1997 (lack of cones) 1 - American Robin - 9th time on count 1 - Brown Thrasher - 2nd time on count - coming to feeder 31 - European Starling - lowest count since 1997 - count average is 110 1 - American Tree Sparrow - lowest since 1997 2 - White-throated Sparrow - 6th time on count, last time was 2007 1 - Red-winged Blackbird - 6th tiem on count, last time was 2007 2 - Pine Grosbeak 2 - Evening Grosbeak Missed specie Canada Goose - been present on all counts from 2007 to 2013 Gullls - three species on Lake Bernard the day before count but no gulls of any species on count day House Sparrow - absent - in last few years were restricted to two barns with cattle. These barns are now have not cattle and the House Sparrows are gone.
