Hi folks:
I know...anticipation for new year list! ... What will be your first 2015
bird? for the inveterate listers..... Today I did some scouting and here
are the Results. So go get them tomorrow!
A) High Park Sanctuary and Grenadier pond. To access Sanctuary drive South of
Bloor on Colborne Lodge Dr. to Skating ring or Pool area. Park and walk
easterly downhill on path that will lead to many bird feeders( at least 50!)
where wood shaving piles are; even if you walk on dirt paths you will get
there!. Be patient the Evening Grosbeak drink from dark feeder most easterly
and feed mostly on the westerly feeders; some gentle folks bring plenty of feed
to stock the feeders
Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) 1 Male on open water of Pond
Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) 2
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 1 juvenile scares most birds in Sanctuary!
Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) 1 at Sanctuary
Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) 4
Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) 3
Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) 20
Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) 3
White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) 4
White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) 5
Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) 20
Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) 4
House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) 15
American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) 8
Evening Grosbeak (Coccothraustes vespertinus) 5 Many Pics & Video taken;
coming to drink & feed at "Sanctuary"; at least 4 males and a female type

B) at Sunnyside beach. Windermere Rd at the Lake park and walk to "beach".
Snowy Owl was on the wall near Royal Burger eatery & miniscule white lighthouse
on the beach. I did not find the King Eider anywhere ( not at the Humber River
Mouth nor Humber bay east!!
Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) 1 1st year on the wall in front of beach
Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) 6 two adults and four 1st & 2nd
year birds
Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) 1 Sat on the wall opposite Royal Burger
eatery; She was still there 2 hours later

C) At HUMBER Bay East ( south of Lakeshore BLVD at Parklawn, go to Parking lot;
also drive & bird Marine Parade Dr )
American Wigeon (Anas americana) 12 Off Marine Parade Dr in The East Humber
Redhead (Aythya americana) 15
Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) 200 At least; large raft off the furthest
east point; also seen from Waterfront Rd/ Marine Parade Dr
Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) 20 Most of them were from small
bridge south of main parking lot ; equal male & female-types
Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) 6
Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) 8
Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) 14 Many near the eastern point looking
north; some close to Marine Parade Dr.

D) Sand Beach Parkette ( South Etobicoke), Lakeshore Blvd west of Royal York
Rd; first street (before McDonald's) turn south to lake; look easterly. I only
found 1st year male today, but have seen adult male as well
Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) 1 1st year male seen mingling
with Goldeneyes; adult male NOT seen
Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) 25
Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) 20
Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) 30
Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) 3
