Another year has passed and it is time to obtain or renew ‘free’ entry permits for the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. The municipality requires annual permits.
There are a number of methods to obtain the permit and the easiest is by email. I do not send out permits (!), so please use one of the following methods: 1) By Email (change ‘at’ to @): Send your request to Candy McGuigan, Customer Service Rep. at: candym at chatham-kent.ca Or, anyone at the office can help you, including: bmcracken at chatham-kent.ca or tsloan at chatham-kent.ca Your permit will be sent as a WORD attachment. Print it off, sign, and keep with you. Send a scanned, signed copy back to one of the above emails for their current files. 2) In Person: Visit the Municipal Service Centre downtown Blenheim 8:30am---4:30pm, Mon. to Fri. 35 Talbot St. West [in the Post Office building ] 3) By Mail: Blenheim Municipal Service Centre P.O.Box 2128, Blenheim,On., N0P 1A0 4) By Fax or Phone: ---------------------------------------------------------- Fax : 519-676-0244 ---------------------------------------------------------- Phone : 519-676-5405 DIRECTIONS TO THE LAGOON SITE: Blenheim is on #3 Hwy [Talbot Rd.] in Chatham-Kent. Take # 3 Hwy West out of Blenheim, about 1 km. You will see a car wash at the corner of Lagoon Rd., turn right [North]. Go about 1/2 km. and you will see a small locked gate [see below]. Enter at this gate *ONLY*. For those coming by #401. Take interchange #90-which is #40 Hwy North & Communication Rd. South. Travel South, towards Blenheim, a few km. Just as you reach the outskirts of Blenheim, you will see a "Sobey's " grocery store. It is at the corner of Allison Rd. Turn right On Allison and travel 2.9 km. This will take you to Lagoon Rd., Turn left on Lagoon Rd. where you will see the lagoon property and the small gate [not the large gate]. Entry is by combination lock. You will be given the #'s with your Permit (same # as always!). Do not pass #'s on to other people. NOTE: **Please park on the lagoon side of the road only. Road becomes too narrow for farm machinery if cars are on both sides. **Please close and latch gate behind you when entered. **Please LOCK gate when leaving! (I have arrived there with nobody in sight and seeing the gate wide open many times!!) This is a privilege so please be respectful. Please make use of the sightings book in the box near the gate to record your significant sightings! Others will appreciate to know what is around. (Many thanks to Irene Woods for maintaining the sightings book on a yearly basis!) RECENT SIGHTINGS: Needless to say, the lagoon cells are almost entirely frozen. There is a bit of open water towards the back and of course the bubbly pond is open. Situation should change this coming week. Sunday March 29, there were a few ducks including Wood, Mallard, Black, American Wigeon, Redhead, Ring-necked, Bufflehead and scaup. Among the many Canada Geese were a Snow Goose and 3 Cackling Geese. As well, a few Tundra Swans were hanging around. Good birding, Blake A.
