A great morning for birding at Point Pelee so far today. There was a good migration of birds into the Park last night. It was a calm warm morning greeting the birders at the Tip. Soon a breeze came up from the west and a number of birds were noted moving off the Tip. That included a few Baltimore Orioles, warblers, at least one Scarlet Tanager, numerous Bobolinks, Red-Headed Woodpecker. Also noted at the Tip was a Hairy Woodpecker, an American Pipit and a few warbler species. The highlight though was an adult SUMMER TANAGER just north of the washrooms and moving into the Loop Woods.
In all at least 12 warbler species have been found including Northern Parula, Ovenbird, Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green Warblers. Along the West side at the Tip near the Solar Panel a Grasshopper Sparrow was found. At the Tram station by the Nature Centre a large group of Pine Siskins was seen as well as Blackburnian Warbler and Northern Parula. Most of the warblers were noted on Woodland Trail and Post Woods Trail. The moulting Eared Grebe from yesterday was seen again today off the West beach not too far from the Nature Centre. Farther afield the American Avocet was seen at Hillman Marsh Shorebird Cell this morning. Remember it is also being seen at the bridge on Mersea Road 2 near the main entrance to Hillman Marsh CA.
