Good Afternoon Birders –
Welcome to the Essex Region, and we hope that your are having some great
birding days and nights so far! We just wanted to take a moment to
hopefully provide some helpful information.
1. While our daily entry fee to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area
has been raised to $6 per car, we recognize we perhaps haven’t done a
good job in communicating this change, so for the balance of the month
of May, ERCA will continue to honour the $5 per car fee that has been in
effect for many years. Of course, birders know that this small fee
helps to offset the costs of maintaining trails, washrooms, cutting the
grass and maintaining all the visitor amenities offered at this site,
and we thank you for contributions.
2. For the Shorebird and Songbird Celebration planned for this
upcoming May 9 & 10, the cost will be $10 for this special event –a
great bargain when you consider the many walks, talks and activities
that we have provided for the weekend.
3. Of course, for those of you with an Annual pass, a Hillman
Spring Birding Pass or the joint Pelee/Hillman Birding Pass, there is no
additional charge to attend the special event at Hillman – entry to the
Shorebird and Songbird Celebration is included with your pass!
4. We will have gate staff on duty at Hillman from 3pm – 7:30pm at
each of the Shorebird Nights hosted by OFO, as well as for the Shorebird
and Songbird Celebration in case you wish to purchase an Annual Pass or
a Hillman Spring Birding Pass. The joint Pelee/Hillman 3-day pass is
available at the Point Pelee Gate.
5. Hope you like the new Shorebird Identification Sign at Hillman
Marsh Shorebird Habitat, and we again extend our sincere appreciation to
OFO and Mike Malone at Pelee Wings Nature Store for their contributions
to this sign, and especially to Jean Iron for her significant assistance
with the technical information on this sign!
