Highlights of reports April 30 through May 7 - spring migration is climbing rapidly across the Niagara Frontier Region. Nineteen warbler species were reported this week from Chautauqua County, the Lake Erie shore, Tifft Nature Preserve and Forest Lawn in Buffalo, Amherst State Park, Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island and the State Parks of the Lake Ontario Plains. There are still an almost equal number of warbler species expected to arrive by the middle of the month. Aside from warblers, arriving into and transiting through the region - RUBY-T. HUMMINGBIRD, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GR. CR. FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THR. VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WREN, VEERY, HERMIT THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, FOX SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW, WHITE-CR. SPARROW, ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, BOBOLINK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and May 7, SCARLET TANAGER at Tifft Nature Preserve. Of note, May 3, single RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at two locations on the Lake Ontario shore, and a first Niagara County record of FISH CROW, at Wilson-Tuscaurora State Park. EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, a species added to the region in the past year, continues in Niagara County at the Wilson Harbor and surrounding neighborhood. Wide ranging PINE SISKINS - 16 at a North Boston feeder in southern Erie County, and over 100 along the Lake Ontario shore. Shorebird migration lags the perching birds. SPOTTED SANDPIPER at several locations, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at Amherst State Park and in the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Also this week, a SURF SCOTER at the Batavia Waste Water Plant and 2 SANDHILL CRANES at Cayuga Pool in the Iroquois Refuge.
