Yesterday morning I walked 100 - 150 metres down Black Bear Road off Victoria
Road, in the Carden Plains area north of Kirkfield, and saw 7 species of
sparrows. What a great area for watching grassland birds.
The 7 sparrow species recorded were Song, Savannah, Field, Vesper, Grasshopper,
Chipping and Swamp.
The cultural meadows along both sides of Victoria Road, about 1 km south of
North Mountain Road, contained numerous Upland Sandpipers walking along the
roadsides, Sandhill Crane, American Bittern, Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark,
Yellow Warbler and Eastern Kingbird to name a few.
