Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Highlights: Shorebird sightings have definitely increased this week though things remain generally quiet otherwise: Highlights of the last week include; SANDHILL CRANE, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and HENSLOW'S SPARROW. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen at Napanee Limestone Plain IBA on 14th this week, as well as a couple of GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS. At nearby Strathcona, a CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW was seen on 15th. Amherstview Sewage Lagoons (soon to be temporarily closed for maintenance) produced the best bird of the week in a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE - also on 15th. It remained for just 1 afternoon. Also seen that day were slowly increasing numbers of teal - 5 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 7 GREEN-WINGED TEAL. The next day, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER was reported along with good numbers of LESSER YELLOWLEGS (52 on 15th), GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER. Crosby Road, near Crosby, had SEDGE WREN on 2 dates this week - 4 were heard singing on 12th and 3 were noted there on 13th. Canoe Lake Road again produced a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH this week on 12th - it is usually quite tricky to see this species during the summer. Over at Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre, a SANDHILL CRANE was heard on 11th. Once again, Perch River WMA, Jefferson County, NY has again had HENSLOW'S SPARROWS this week - 1 was seen on 13th. Ten BLACK_CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were present on 16th. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels.
