Today from noon to 12:20 hundreds of birds moved rapidly through my yard at
tree top level. It had been raining for about an hour and the calls of Eastern
Kingbirds alerted me to the odd event. Hundreds of Robins, 14+ Eastern
Kingbirds , 5-6 Emidonax flycatchers, 10+ Orioles, Blue Jays, one Mourning
Dove, a Downy Woodpecker, 2 Northern Flickers, several vireos and several
warblers moved by in this 20 minute period. All were high in the trees (about
40+ feet) and didn’t land long enough to identify most of them. And then they
were gone and the hinterland was quiet again. Not really sure what was
happening as early and late migrants were mingled together but assuredly
something drove them southbound.
