Hi Ontbirders,

This morning, Cecile and Morris Yarrow and I watched the dispersal of
Great Egrets from their roost site at the Hamilton Wetlands, just west
of Demorestville in Prince Edward County. A total of 47 egrets left the
roost during the period 0600 - 0625; sunrise was approximately 0616.
Among the egrets leaving the roost was one which carried a green
wing-tag and the number 87T. This bird was banded by us on 30 June 2015
at the nesting colony on Nottawasaga Island, near Collingwood in
southern Georgian Bay; it was too young to fly when banded. This roost
has been active since at least mid-July this year and reached a season's
high number of egrets last week at 70 birds. We will be surveying it
until last October this year.

I might remind Ontbirders that I will gladly receive counts of the
number of egrets using the roosts at the Hespeler Mill Pond, Minesing
Swamp (off the 2nd Concession, west of McKinnon Rd at Angus), Muddy
Creek (Wheatley), Port Maitland and Hillman Marsh...to name a few that I
have not heard from this year.

Many thanks J

Chip

Directions: From the junction of County Highways 14 and 15 in
Demorestville in Prince Edward County, go 2.5 km west on Hwy 14 and
search to the left (south) through various openings among the cedar
trees for a wetland....the egrets forage in the wetland and roost in the
trees beyond the wetland, further to the south.
