Hi Everyone Spent the day birding various location in eastern Ontario. At Presqu'ile Provincial Park Doug McRae and I birded from Beach #1 to Owen Point and had very few shorebirds. The total was 13 Sanderling, 1 Least Sandpiper, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper and 2 Spotted Sandpiper. The water level was high but lots of good habitat for a fallout between Beach #1- Beach #4 (Owen Point Trail). Other birds of note including 2 juv. Great-Black-backed Gulls, 60+ Caspian Terns, 42 Redhead, 3 Long-tailed Ducks, 300+ Herring Gulls, and 85 Mute Swans.
Off Highway 401 northeast of Napanee (Napanee Plain Alvar Natural Area) I observed 4 Loggerhead Shrikes, 3 unbanded and one banded. Other sightings included 6 Upland Sandpipers, 40+ Bobolinks and 7 American Kestrels. Yesterday, August 19 I had a juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper at Almonte Sewage Lagoon. Good birding, Bruce Directions: Courtesy of Fred Helleiner: To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted until after September 10 to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds there. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightings board provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there. Directions: From Kingston take Hwy 401 west to exit #593 and go north to Nugent Road and turn left. Follow west to CR 27. The Loggerhead Shrikes were near the intersection. Directions: Almonte Sewage Lagoon: From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 155 (March Road or Regional Road 49). Turn left onto March Road and follow it for 16 km through Almonte. After passing the lagoons on your right turn right on Ramsay Concession 8. Watch for a small entrance sign opposite the cemetery. From there, follow the trail along the edge of the field to the viewing platform. Bruce Di Labio P.O.
