Bringing some welcomed relief, a cavalry of clouds waded into view after noon. But the sky soon turned from blue to white then an ominous gray as the familiar sound of distant thunder heralded the arrival of an approaching storm, hastening our departure. Throughout, haze diminished our spotting capabilities. The wind, calm early, shifted east and picked up as the day progressed. Raptor Observations: Merlin, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk and Turkey Vulture all graced us with their presence for the first time this season as solid early showings from Osprey and Northern Harrier signaled a potential uptick in migratory activity. Non-raptor Observations: Red-headed Woodpecker (1), Spotted Sandpiper (2), Bobolink (4), Chimney Swift (15+), Purple Martin (2), Warbling Vireo (2), Baltimore Oriole (1), Red-winged Blackbird (45+), Common Grackle (20+), American Goldfinch (6), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (3) Northern Flicker (1), Killdeer (2), Forster's Tern (4), Caspian Tern (4), Black Saddlebags (13), Common Green Darner (7), Monarch (8) Predictions: Partly cloudy with warm temps, light south wind and a small chance of a stray shower or two. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
