Highlights: A change in the weather, bringing hot, humid, conditions did nothing for the birds and the week was bit of an anti-climax. Warblers continue to come through but this week's highlights are brief: STILT SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, NORTHERN PARULA, and HOODED WARBLER. Kingston A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Lake Ontario Park on 2nd. Invista had a mix of migrants on 4th, including YELLOW-RUMPED and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, as well as a small movement of WARBLING VIREOS. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK (scarce this summer), was seen in Reddendale on 3rd. Wolfe Island A slight drop in Lake Ontario's water level provided enough habitat for 3 KILLDEER and 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Reed's Bay on 2nd but that's it for the shorebirds this week. At nearby Big Sandy Bay, an AMERICAN WOODCOCK was showing off on the main access trail, also on 2nd, but warbler diversity was poor, with BAY-BREASTED and WILSON'S WARBLERS being the highlight. An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was seen at Button Bay the same day. Prince Edward Point The best bird of the week was a female HOODED WARBLER seen at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory on 30th. Also seen the same day was a good selection of autumn warblers, including CAPE-MAY, BAY-BREASTED, WILSON'S and CANADA. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen there on 31st. Other sightings NORTHERN PARULAS were seen near Elginburg and Battersea on 30th. A BLACKPOLL WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER and 2 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS were observed near Sunbury today (4th). At Martin Edwards Reserve, Amherst Island, a STILT SANDPIPER, 12 SANDERLING and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON were seen on 29th. Stateside Some very good sightings came in from across the border in Jefferson County, NY. Three BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 8 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen on 31st. Please note that the ferry situation continues in our area and the expected return date of the Wolfe Islander is now 'unknown'. This means that the Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Glenora ferries continue be at half capacity. Also, in case you missed the news, Amherstview Sewage Lagoons is currently closed to all access - hopefully reopening in October. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
