Hints of blue began to peek through by late afternoon, the skies progressively brightening into the evening hours. Any additional rain failed to materialize and, even better, there was no haze to speak of. Shifting north today, the wind was mostly moderate with some occasional strong gusts. Raptor Observations: Itching to move, a blast of birds zoomed south once the sky began to clear late, mostly very high. Heavy volume eluded us but there was more than enough variety to keep things interesting. We added our first Peregrine Falcon and first Broad-winged Hawks of the young season. American Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Bald Eagle and Northern Harrier asserted themselves more fully. Osprey and Turkey Vulture continued to drift by. And Cooper's Hawk and Merlin jetted past. Eleven species in all, not bad for this early in the fall. Non-raptor Observations: American White Pelican (10), Common Nighthawk (16), Common Loon (3), Solitary Sandpiper (2), Lesser Yellowlegs (1), Great Blue Heron (3), Pied-billed Grebe (3), Chimney Swift (18), Mourning Dove (28), Northern Flicker (1), American Goldfinch (15+), Cedar Waxwing (35+), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (3), Black Saddlebags (18), Common Green Darner (73), Monarch (38) Predictions: Sunny and clear with highs in the upper 70s and moderate east wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
