Highlights of reports received September 3 through September 10 from the Niagara Frontier Region include WHIP-POOR-WILL, BUFF-BR. SANDPIPER and GOLDEN-WING. WARBLER. In southern Erie County, September 3, a WHIP-POOR-WILL calling at dusk in a yard in the Town of Holland. Shorebirds on the Lake Erie beaches and sod farms on the Niagara Peninsula were highlighted by 2 continuing BUFF-BR. SANDPIPERS, September 3, on Hutchinson Road in Dunnville. At Rock Point Provincial Park this week, highlights included RUDDY TURNSTONE, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and STILT SANDPIPER. Also, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at several sod farm locations. September 10, north of the Iroquois Refuge in Shelby, 9 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS on the south side of Fletcher Chapel Road. In the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, 10 shorebird species on the north side of the Feeder Canal included 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and a STILT SANDPIPER. At Amherst State Park, 11 warbler species on September 9 included a female GOLDEN-WING. WARBLER, on the west bank of the creek north of the wooden bridge. Also at the park, 2 YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHERS, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, VEERY, 2 GRAY- CHEEKED THRUSHES, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SCARLET TANAGER and ROSE-BR. GROSBEAK. September 5, the BOS field trip to Buckhorn Island State Park on Grand Island, witnessed the spectacular evening fly- in of over 30,000 PURPLE MARTINS to Grass Island in the Niagara River. Also on the field trip - MERLIN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK and AMERICAN WOODCOCK. Other reports this week - at the Batavia Waste Water Plant, EARED GREBE continues, several SORAS and VIRGINIA RAILS calling at wetland #2 by the tunnel, and 35 GREAT EGRETS. At Windmill Marsh in the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, 100 GREAT EGRETS. In Ontario, RED-HEADED WDPKR. at Kraft Road in Fort Erie. And, a large flock of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS in a Cheektowaga yard near the airport. There will be a BOS field trip this Sunday, September 13, to Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo.
