Weather:
A messy morning turned into a manageable afternoon. Intermittent morning
rain limited visibility but never rose to the level of shutting us down
entirely. Some afternoon clearing brought bluer skies but gray clouds
continued to creep into view periodically. The wind was light and out of
the southwest early, strengthening considerably and blustering out of the
northwest later.
Raptor Observations:
Migration was minimal during the morning hours. Picking up somewhat after
noon, activity remained sporadic until the end of the count. Broad-winged
Hawks drifted by in small groups of no more than 20 individuals. A trickle
of harriers and accipiters fought the strong northwest wind. And three more
fleet Merlins shot by.
Non-raptor Observations:
American Wigeon (3), Blue-winged Teal (11), American Coot (2), Forster's
Tern (35+), Caspian Tern (7), Common Loon (1), Lesser Yellowlegs (2), Tree
Swallow (2000+), Chimney Swift (50+), Cape May Warbler (3), Ruby-throated
Hummingbird (3), Black Saddlebags (8), Common Green Darner (9), Monarch
(85)
Predictions:
Partly cloudy with moderate temps and light northeast wind. Sounds pretty
good for our second day of HawkFest.
