Weather:
Clear early, clouds quickly crept into view, leaving us with a shifting
mixture of blue skies, puffy white clouds and high cirrus for the rest of
the day. Temperatures rose as the day wore on, topping out in the low 70s.
The sun, mild in the morning, began to bear down on us in the afternoon.
The wind was light to moderate and out of the northeast and east.
Raptor Observations:
After a week-long layoff, Broad-winged Hawks triumphantly returned to the
count sheet today. The last three hours of the count featured stream after
stream, at first crossing far out over the lake, then creeping closer and
closer, until, by early evening, they were streaming out high overhead.
Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels mixed in, particularly late in
the day, and Northern Harrier continued their strong start to the season.
Lastly, our first Swainson's Hawk of the season wandered by, hidden among
an early afternoon broadwing stream.
Non-raptor Observations:
Red-headed Woodpecker (1), Blue Jay (1100+), Cedar Waxwing (20+),
Red-winged Blackbird (25+), Black Saddlebags (5), Common Green Darner (21),
Monarch (156)
Predictions:
Similar to today: partly cloudy skies with mild temps and moderate wind out
of the northeast and east. Should be another good day.
