Temperatures fell today, never breaking into the 70s for the first time in a long time. Coupled with the strong north wind, the last day of September was the first to feel even a little like October. Raptor Observations: After a relatively quiet September, Turkey Vultures took to the skies today, parading south after noon, a few small groups of Broad-winged Hawks in tow. American Kestrels reasserted themselves after a quiet week. Sharp-shinned Hawks continued to shoot by in good numbers, wrapping up their best September since 2010. And not to be outdone, finishing out their best September since 2007, Northern Harriers produced yet another double-digit flight. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay (35000+), Least Sandpiper (6), Pine Siskin (1), Horned Lark (2), Tree Swallow (200+), American Goldfinch (30+), Chimney Swift (5), Canada Goose (50+), Forster's Tern (30+), Common Green Darner (3), Monarch (15) Predictions: Mostly sunny with mild temps and strong northeast wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
