Temperatures reached the mid 50s but no higher. The wind did us no favors for a third straight day, blustering out of the northeast throughout. Raptor Observations: Like yesterday, migratory activity started fairly strong but declined as the day progressed. Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures dominated the proceedings, their heft supplemented by a sprinkling of buteos and harriers. Several detachments of vultures came a little closer early in the day, but for the most part, the division remained well south of us. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay (18000+), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2), Northern Flicker (2), Red-winged Blackbird (40+) Yellow-rumped Warbler (15+), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (3), Tree Swallow (500+), Chimney Swift (3), Common Loon (1), Forster's Tern (7) Predictions: Overcast with cool temps, strong northeast wind and a 60 percent chance of afternoon rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
