Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Clive Hodder, Derek Lyon, Jim Dunn, Keith Sealy,
Ronnie Goodhand
Visitors:
Thanks to the crew who helped with today's count...Jen & Derek, Clive H.,
Winston, Keith S., Ronnie and Jim along with Tim from Washington DC
Approx 20 other visitors throughout the day.
Weather:
Winds were light and variable and the weather was beautiful with lots of
sunshine. Temp was warmer to a high of 16C. Some cloud cover to start the
day and it slowly built to about 50% for the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Not a bad flight given the variable winds... with a total of 565 birds
tallied for the day. Most hawks were pretty low in the sky for good viewing
for visitors and the counters with the exception of the TV's going through
in the north. The bulk of today's flight was TVs (468)...along with a lone
Bald Eagle, H. Harriers (17 - A nice bonus were that 3 of these were
males), Sharpies (49) and a single Cooper's Hawk...with Redtails (2) and
Broadwings (3) and for falcons we had Kestrels (19), Merlins (2) and a nice
surprise Peregrines (3).
Non-raptor Observations:
A pleasant surprise was the number of passerines migrating through which
continued through to the end of the day. Blue Jays (1800 counted) Ruby C
& Golden C Kinglets (lots), Yellow-rumped W (lots), Brown Creeper (2),
Blackpoll W, Palm W, Black-throated Green W, Bay Breasted W, Wilson's W,
Tennessee W, Phoebe, Common Loon (10), Kingfisher, 12 Tundra Swans, 3
Red-throated Loons, White-throated & White Crowned Sparrows, Field Sparrow,
Song Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, White Breasted nuthatch, Blue-headed vireo,
Pileated Woodpecker, Downy W, House Wren.
16 Monarchs counted from the mound.
