Not until near completion did a covering of gray clouds interrupt our idyll. Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures were up early today. Appearing hesitant at first, several large groups drifted back and forth over Canada before settling on a tried-and-true plan of action, winding their way north and then west over Grosse Ile and past the stacks. Sharp-shinned Hawks again made up the bulk of the count besides the vultures. But it was two peregrines that grabbed our attention midday, one an adult missing a chunk of wing, the other a juvenile dangling a talon. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay (14000+), Red-winged Blackbird (200+), Chimney Swift (30+), Common Grackle (6), Common Loon (1) Predictions: Mostly cloudy with mild temps and strong west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
