Weather:
So much for our run of pleasant conditions. Temperatures again hovered
around the mid 50s, but the sky turned gray today, overcast from start to
finish. And not only that, the wind picked up considerably, blustering out
of the east with little let-up.
Raptor Observations:
Outside a brief pulse of midday movement, the strong east wind did us few
favors. Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks kept on trucking, as did, most
notably, another double-digit showing of Golden Eagles. Unlike our two
previous outings, when all the Goldens pumped past after noon, they were up
earlier today, pushing through during a three hour stretch from late
morning to early afternoon. Amid all the buteos and eagles, though, there
was one bird in particular that grabbed everyone's attention: the season's
second Northern Goshawk. The gos came barreling at us from just over Three
Trees around noon, crossing directly overhead and eliciting a rapturous
reaction from the enthusiastic onlookers below.
Non-raptor Observations:
American Crow (40000+), Hermit Thrush (2), Red-breasted Merganser (5),
Pied-billed Grebe (2), Bonaparte's Gull (3), Forster's Tern (5), Common
Loon (1), Monarch (1)
Predictions:
Lots of rain and strong south wind.
