An unyielding armada of gray clouds remained wholly indifferent to our plight, racing in to squelch every sprouting patch of blue sky. Temperatures ranged slightly higher, topping out in the low 50s today. And a welcome change, the wind died down considerably. When there was wind, it was light and out of the west. Raptor Observations: A midday burst of buteos was bracketed by quiet skies early and late. Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks arrived on the scene around noon, commanding our attention for the next two hours. Among the buteos strode two more older Golden Eagles of unknown age. This season has featured more non-first year Goldens pushing through in October than I can remember. Non-raptor Observations: scaup sp. (5000+), Redhead (20+), Hooded Merganser (4), Horned Grebe (3), Pied-billed Grebe (6), Common Loon (1), American Crow (1200+), American Goldfinch (25+), Song Sparrow (1) Predictions: Overcast with mild temps and moderate south wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
