A blustery west wind summoned periodic waves of thick gray clouds that repeatedly snuffed out every burgeoning glimmer of clearing and, just for good measure, dumped a frosty mixture of rain and graupel on us. Sensing a recurring theme, we beat a hasty retreat by early afternoon. Raptor Observations: Movement was minimal for a second straight day. Two harriers sneaking in low along the lake, a subadult Bald Eagle pumping hard over the channel and a wind-battered sharpie struggling against the elements were all we could muster. Non-raptor Observations: FRANKLIN'S GULL (1), Bonaparte's Gull (120+), Tundra Swan (70+), Canada Goose (350+), scaup sp. (8000+), Common Goldeneye (5), Bufflehead (4), Hooded Merganser (2), Pied-billed Grebe (2), Eastern Towhee (1), American Goldfinch (30+) Predictions: Mostly sunny with cool temps and moderate west wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
