Visitors:
I'd like to extend a small token of gratitude to Andrew Sturgess for his
many and varied contributions to the hawk watch this season. Thanks so much
Andy.
Weather:
Chilly temperatures and light northeast wind left us frosty throughout. The
sun provided only occasional warmth, often blotted out by a thin smear of
high clouds.
Raptor Observations:
An adult Golden Eagle gliding into the trees off to our right kick started
an active and enjoyable late November outing. Oodles of Red-tailed and
Red-shouldered hawks followed close behind, pushing past in wave after wave
during the late morning and early afternoon. Adding to the high quality
buteo flight, three light morph Rough-legged Hawks sauntered through the
viewing area in the afternoon, two congenial enough to cross low and close.
After a three-day absence, a nice late November showing of Turkey Vultures
returned to the count sheet, wobbling by in dribs and drabs throughout. And
finally, in a season of limited Cooper's Hawk movement, five feisty Coops
sped through today, taking advantage of favorable conditions.
Non-raptor Observations:
American Crow (430+), Sandhill Crane (6), Common Merganser (8), Hooded
Merganser (1)
Predictions:
Partly cloudy with cool temps and moderate east wind.
