This didn't last too long however, with a shelf of heavy cloud rolling quickly off the lake and covering the sun once again for the whole day other than a few sporadic sun patches. Winds started at 12kph from the south in the morning and lessened as time went on, to around 8kph. The temperature stayed between 6C and 7C. Raptor Observations: Various (3) Red-tails appeared and disappeared and perched for hours through the day, but did not migrate. The two migrants of the day came at the same time: a curious immature Northern Harrier that flew from the north side of the marsh to investigate our plastic owl, and a Red-tail that appeared at the same time but was on a mission to cross the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: Migrant non-raptors are few and far-between as well. A group of 17 American Crows, 4 European Starlings, 29 Cedar Waxwings, and 5 American Goldfinches made the big leap. Most of the activity around the tower was from 8 American Tree Sparrows. All the species of ducks were mixed up together and quite mobile within the marsh. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S26220723 Predictions: An exceptionally warm December day, going up to 10C, with 20-35kph winds from the south. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
