Highlights of reports received December 10 through December 17 from the Niagara Frontier Region include BALTIMORE ORIOLE, SNOWY OWL and GULLS. December 16, in a yard in the Erie County Village of Orchard Park, a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE, feeding on wild grapes and at a seed feeder. Despite the absence of snow, to date, SNOWY OWLS are in the region - one at the Canadaway Creek Sanctuary on Route 5, south of Dunkirk, and several reported in the area of the Buffalo Airport in Cheektowaga. Ten species of gulls this week on the lower Niagara River and at the falls. Highlighted by a lingering, juvenile BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE in the falls gorge, and an adult THAYER'S GULL at the barge above the falls. Other gulls at the power plants, and above the falls - BONAPARTE'S GULL, LITTLE GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, HERRING GULL, ICELAND GULL. L. BLACK-B. GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and GREAT BLACK-B. GULL. Up to three HARLEQUIN DUCKS above falls - adult and immature males, plus a female, best observed from the outer Three Sisters Islands off Goat Island in Niagara Falls, New York. The ducks frequent a rock marked with small trees near the barge. An immature male HARLEQUIN DUCK also continues on the New York shore downriver of the power plants. And at least one of the BL.-GR. GNATCATCHERS still at Dufferine Islands Park, in Ontario. December 16, a new high count for BLACK VULTURES - at least 11 BLACK VULTURES among 40 TURKEY VULTURES roosting in the Niagara County Village of Lewiston. The same date, three BLACK VULTURES across the Niagara River in Ontario, over the Queenston escarpment. A COMMON RAVEN also harassing TURKEY VULTURES above the escarpment. Also reported this week - 13 WILD TURKEYS on the railroad tracks behind the Cabela's store in Cheektowaga. Another 6 WILD TURKEYS and a SWAMP SPARROW at Woodlawn Beach Park in Hamburg.
