Highlights of reports received January 21 through January 29
  from the Niagara Frontier Region.

At Golden Hill State Park on the Lake Ontario shore, a
KILLDEER on January 21 and 22. Only three January records of
the species since the year 2000.

January 24, a SAVANNAH SPARROW at a feeder near the Iroquois
Refuge in the Town of Shelby.

A PINE WARBLER continues at Goat Island in Niagara Falls,
New York. First reported January 21, and present on the
27th. Found along the path near the Three Sisters Islands
parking area. An AMERICAN PIPIT has been at Goat
  Island during January.

Five HARLEQUIN DUCKS still off the Three Sisters Islands, at
a rock in the rapids marked with a small tree. Gulls at the
islands and above the falls - 8 L. BLACK-B. GULLS, ICELAND
GULL and a count of only 41 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS, a species
that have been more abundant in past years.

Unexpected flocks of blackbird continue this winter.
  Primarily BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS and RED-W. BLACKBIRDS, a
flock of over 600 in Ontario, at a corn processing plant at
Highways 406 and 20 in Thorold. Other flocks over Amherst,
and single RED-W. BLACKBIRD and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD at a
  feeder on Grand Island.

PINE SISKINS at feeders this week - one in Cheektowaga and
  three in Thorold, Ontario.

January 24, a waterfowl count around Grand Island reported
18 species and one hybrid - an apparent NORTHERN PINTAIL X
MALLARD along the island's East River Parkway. Also, 30
HOODED MERGANSERS almost outnumbered COMMON MERGANSER and
RED-BR. MERGANSER totals, 408 TUNDRA SWANS, 82 LESSER SCAUP,
  53 RING-NECKED DUCKS and 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. Most
abundant waterfowl - 3600 CANVASBACKS and 1400 GREATER
  SCAUP.

Dunkirk Harbor has frozen over, cancelling the BOS field
  trip planned for January 31.

The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, February
  4. Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
  reporting.
