In the last couple of weeks there has been a significant movement of Pine
Siskins with hundreds appearing at feeders. Some reports of redpolls
appeared around the same time but In the past few days a major northward
advance of redpolls has occurred with flocks of dozens to hundreds being
reported across a broad front in Eastern Ontario. Many of the redpolls are
being seen not just at feeders but along roadsides as they head north in
active migration. Last fall there was a significant movement of redpolls
south through Quebec with most of the birds likely wintering in the
Northeastern U.S.

I am interested in knowing the breadth of the movement, especially how far
west in the province the birds are being seen in significant numbers.
Purple Finches have been moving through at the same time but not in the
numbers of these species and are mainly being sighted at feeders. To avoid
clogging the Ontbirds posts please e-mail me privately at

species (Pine Siskin, Common Redpolls, Purple Finch)
number
date
location (place names)
setting (at feeders, along roadsides, other)

Reports of Hoary Redpoll are regular with one or more present in large
flocks. There has also been a report of a larger Siskin which would be the
variety found in Greenland.
