Highlights: It looks like birds have started to finally arrive - 16 species of warbler were seen in Kingston this morning (8th). Highlights of the week include: SNOW GOOSE, BRANT, BLACK SCOTER, LEAST SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, LITTLE GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, SNOWY OWL, GYRFALCON, and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH. Please note that Amherstview Sewage Lagoons is still undergoing construction work and is strictly off limits to all. It is now predicted to re-open to those with written permission in late summer/early autumn. Kingston Marshlands CA is once again the place to be as it is now producing a great variety of warblers. Highlights this morning include CAPE MAY, NORTHEN PARULA, MAGNOLIA and BLACKBURNIAN, amongst the 16 species seen. The last few days has seen EASTERN KINGBIRDS and GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS return to the same site, with BLUE-HEADED VIREOS now passing through. A VEERY was also seen there this morning. Following a push of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS are now being seen. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was also seen this morning. Wolfe Island IBA Both SNOW GOOSE and SNOWY OWL were seen on 1st but not since. NORTHERN PARULA and VEERY were at Big Sandy Bay this morning, and 8 LEAST SANDPIPERS were on 5th Line. BOBOLINK was seen on 7th Line yesterday (7th) and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD was still at Big Sandy Bay this morning. A (not so common) COMMON TERN was at the Marysville terminal of the Wolfe Island ferry yesterday. Amherst Island 6 LITTLE GULS were seen along the south shore of the island on 2nd, as well as 4 BLACK SCOTER. Two Brant showed up at Martin Edwards Reserve on 5th where 4-5 WILSON'S PHALAROPE and a single DUNLIN were also seen. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen near Owl Woods on 5th. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Prince Edward County Kaiser Cross Road is beginning to slow down but last weekend saw 22 LITTLE GULLS at that location on 30th. A single was also at the marina at Waupoos. On 2nd, 15 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were present at Kaiser, down to 10 the next day. Outside of our area at Montezuma, NY, 45 Long-billed Dowitchers were seen on 1st. Prince Edward Point had two observations of a grey GYRFALCON on 5th. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen there on 7th, and a BLACK TERN was near Waupoos on the same date. Other sightings A small flock of 20 BRANT passed over Charleston Lake Provincial Park on 6th. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE has again been seen at Napanee Plains IBA. Two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were at Ham Road, near Millhaven on 5th and LOUISIANA WATERTHUSH continues to be seen on Canoe Lake Road. A CERULEAN WARBLER was seen along Opinicon Road on 7th. YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS are already quite well represented across the Shield. SANDHILL CRANES were again seen at several locations. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels.
