Despite the heat, 11 teams took part in the annual Carden Challenge.
Winners in the Competitive Birding category with 133 species were the
Cardenals (Dan Bone, Chris Ellingwood, Candice Talbot, Marc Hecnar and
Lucas Handley). Followed closely by the Snakes on the Plain team from the
Biodiversity category (Susan Blayney, Martin Parker, Luke Berg and Mathew
Tobey) who had 127 species of birds along with numerous mammals, herps,
butterflies and dragonflies.

At least two notable new species for the Challenge: a Redhead on Lake
Dalrymple, and a White-winged Scoter on Canal Lake.

The 2016 Carden Challenge raised more than $20,000 for conservation
projects and stewardship actions on the Carden Alvar. Our thanks to
everyone who participated or provided support.

The Carden Alvar is located just north of the village of Kirkfield, between
Orillia and Lindsay.
