I recently spent 10 days camping and birding in Pinery Provincial Park. This 
note outlines some of the bird-related highlights of the park.

1) Prairie Warbler - There are at least 3 territorial males along the foredunes 
near the Lake Huron beach. The most accessible pair is from the Cedar Trail 
boardwalk over the dunes.

2) Black-billed Cuckoo - Common in the park this year. Frequent in the Big 
Burleigh Burn, along the Burleigh Campground Road.

3) Yellow-billed Cuckoo - Present, but less common than the Black-billed.

4) Mourning Warbler - Present in the wetlands along the Ausauble River. A pair 
occurs in the wetlands of the Riverside Trail.

5) Red-headed Woodpecker - Several territories in the park. Found every day in 
the wetlands of the Riverside Trail.

6) Pileated Woodpecker - Abundant in the park.

7) Red-headed Woodpecker - Abundant in the park.

8) Scarlet Tanager - Abundant in the park. At last 3 territorial males singing 
along the Riverside Trail.

9) Yellow-throated Vireo - Abundant in the park.

10) Bell's Vireo - Well observed and heard singing along the Riverside Trail on 
May 27, 2016.

11) Tufted Titmouse - Abundant in the park.

12) Virginia Rail - calling in the sedge meadows along the river edge.

13) Olive-sided Flycatcher - Frequent migrant in the park this year. Found in 
many different habitats in the park.

14) Whip-poor-will - Abundant in the park.

15) Blue-winged Warbler - Frequent in the Big Burleigh Burn, along the Burleigh 
Campground Road.

16) Eastern Bluebird - Frequent in the Big Burleigh Burn, along the Burleigh 
Campground Road.

17) Bald Eagle - Nesting pair in the park, with 2 large young this year.

18) Pine Warbler - Found in pines throughout the park.

The park also had its usual migrants of Wood Warblers, Vireos and Sparrows in 
May.
