Hi Everyone Yesterday, July 5 Ben and I birded the Napanee Alvar and observed 6 Loggerhead Shrikes, 3 fledged young, 2 adults and one unknown. The birds were in the general area of CR 27 and Nugent Road. The young shrikes were still begging for food and spending most of their time along the east side of CR 27 on the Napanee Plain Alvar Nature Reserve. We observed the adults catching insects on the ground and a few times successfully fly-catching from a perch.
On July 3rd I also visited the area and found 5 Loggerhead Shrikes, 2 adult and 3 young plus the remains of a juvenile along the road side of CR 27 just south of Nugent Rd. Likely struck by a vehicle. Other species observed in the general area included Upland Sandpiper, American Kestrel, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, and Eastern Meadowlark. Good birding, Bruce Bruce Di Labio Carp,Ontario 613-715-2571 Directions: From Kingston take Hwy 401 west to exit #593 and go north to Nugent Road and turn left. Follow west to CR 27 (Main Street).
