Visitors:
The hawk tower had several frequent visitors throughout the day today.
Weather:
It was a nice cool breezy day for the first day of counting season. The
high of the day was only 23C and the moderate North wind kept the
temperatures feeling even cooler. Visibility was perfect!
Raptor Observations:
Today was a gorgeous first day start to counting, with 228 raptor migrating
past the tower in total, of 8 species! Broad-winged Hawks, American
Kestrels, and Northern Harriers being the most common. There were also 9
local Bald Eagles and 3 local Osprey flying around the area today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Though the day was filled with raptors, there was also much non-raptor
migration to be seen. A total of about 594 Cedar Waxwings flew over the
tower throughout the day, as well as about 123 individual warblers. There
were also many swallows flying by the tower. There were only a few
migrating dragonflies today, 8 Green Darners, 4 Twelve-spotted Skimmers,
and 3 Black Saddlebags. There was one migrant Monarch. See the full eBird
checklist of all non-migrant-raptors seen today at
http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist/S31364200
Predictions:
Tomorrow should be similar conditions as today, with slightly cooler
temperatures and the winds out of the NE.
