Subject: [Ontbirds] Fwd: OFO HIke Sept. 3 Bruce County( Alfred Raab James
Turland)

OFO Bruce County Hike Oliphant to Ripley; 16 members joined Alfred Raab and
James Turland as stand in leaders for Cindy Cartwright. Before we left our
first stop at the Oliphant Fen cool morning air turned to summer sunshine.
Layers of clothing were peeled off as the temperature rose. We marvelled at
the Fens plant specialists growing right in the roadside ditches.
Shorebirds were the focus of this trip and of the 9 species seen most were
at locations away from the lake. Lake Huron's high water level has left
little suitable habitat. In all 69 species of birds were seen.

Highlights;
Two fly by American Bitterns that landed not far off and stood beak up
doing their best grass impression.

A Merlin circling Ripley Lagoons trying to spook up some prey entertained
us with some acrobatics.

Great Egrets were seen at many stops.

Thanks to all the members who joined in and made some birding memories.
Cheers James Turland
