Visitors:
A pile of visitors today... some local and some from as far as Texas.
Thanks to all our amazing volunteer counters and observers today...along
with all the groups and individuals that ran the booths and the
presentations. A great 2nd day of the Hawk Cliff Open house. Let's hope
the 2nd weekend (17-18th) go as well.
Weather:
A beautiful late summer day with temps to a high of 22C. Winds started out
light from the W and swung through WNW to NW by the afternoon. Luckily we
had some good clouds in the hawkwatch area to help with spotting the birds.
Raptor Observations:
A decent flight today with a total of 1,219 birds. Almost certainly we saw
just the vanguard of the Broadwings and given the height some of them
streamed through today I'm sure we missed a bunch.
Raptors included Osprey (3), Bald Eagles (5), N. Harrier (11), Sharpies
(260), Cooper's (4), Broadwings (701), 1 young Redtail, A. Kestrel (224)
and Merlin (10).
Non-raptor Observations:
With so many visitors got lots of reports of passerines for today...
including warblers (Blackpoll, Parula, Tennessee, Cape May, Magnolia,
Redstart, Yellow-rumped, Palm, Chestnut-sided, Golden-winged, Bay Breasted,
Yellow, Black&White, Wilson's) and Vireos (Red-eyed, Yellow-throated), BB
Cuckoo, E. Peewee, YB Sapsucker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker,
A. Goldfinch, E. Bluebird, Wood Thrush, BG Gnatcatcher, Indigo Bunting, RB
Grosbeak, Barn Swallow, Bank Swallow, Purple Martin, Common Nighthawk and
Common Loon.
Predictions:
A mix of sun and cloud for Monday but not the best winds with predictions
of E to S light winds for the day.
