Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Sean Jenniskens
Observers: Bob Hall-Brooks, Carol Pitts, Ed Pitts, Ian Woodfield,
Jim McCoy, Michael Williamson
Visitors:
Today was the first day Ed and Carole are up from Ohio, and they will be
here for 2 weeks for the migration!
Weather:
Today was warm, but not nearly as hot as last week. No clouds overhead made
it nearly impossible to see if there was any high up migration going on.
Winds were barely noticeable, starting out from the N in the early morning,
turning too S component by mid morning.
Raptor Observations:
No big movement was noticed today, but it is possible they were high up in
the blue sky and missed. All of today birds were fairly low, mostly made up
of Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels, but a few Merlin buzzed up
right over the tower as well. A big female Cooper's Hawk almost flew into
Ed at the edge of the tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
Good movement of Warblers this morning! 15 species were identified in the
shrubs surrounding the tower. A good assortment of Dabbling ducks were
seen, although not in large numbers, and a pair of Lesser Scaup made for an
interesting and unexpected fly-by at the tower. A high flying group of 4
Red-headed Woodpeckers were observed flying East, and a Wilson's Snipe was
observed flying around several times. For the full list of birds, go to our
eBird checklist at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31552035
Plenty more attention was paid to counting dragonflies today compared to
days previous, and as a result, 1,139 Black Saddlebags, 61 Green Darners,
and 12 Twelve-spotted Skimmers were observed migrating, as well as 35
Monarchs.
Predictions:
SW winds are predicted for tomorrow.
