Weather: Overall weather conditions were pleasant - clear blue sky with a small amount of cumulus clouds along the horizon. Winds were light throughout the day - mainly from the south but shifting southeast towards the end of the day. Raptor Observations: Our first "substantial" kettles of Broad-winged Hawks for the season were observed today, totaling 124 birds. While relatively quite small, these kettles provided some excitement for what is to come. Sharp-shinned Hawks still took the lead for the day, totaling 134 birds, with a trickling of American Kestrels, Red-tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles, and a single "blink and you miss it" Merlin. Non-raptor Observations: A single Common Loon was observed in flight north of the count site, but the most fascinating non-raptor sighting were the 65 American White Pelicans seen in flight just east of the count site between Gibraltar and Celeron Island - a real treat for our visitors. Predictions: Tomorrow's conditions should be similar to today's, mostly clear with light winds from the southwest. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
