Observers: Dave Sked, Derek Lyon, Keith Sealy, Mac McAlpine,
Ronnie Goodhand, Tom Stewart
Visitors:
Lots of visitors again today. Thanks to everyone for helping with today;s
count.
Weather:
Clear blue skies made spotting the birds tricky today and the count is
likely low compare to the numbers of bird on the move today. Winds were
predominantly moderate from the E for the day and the temp got to a high of
20C.
Raptor Observations:
While it wasn't nearly as big a flight as yesterday it was not bad with a
total of 545 birds... including Osprey (7), Bald Eagle (2), N. Harrier
(34), Sharpies (99), Broadwings (382), A. Kestrel (19) and Merlin (2).
Non-raptor Observations:
Other species reported today included E. Wood Pewee, Pileated WP, Chimney
Swift, Great Crested Flycatcher, WT Sparrow, RT Hummingbird, warblers
(Nashville, Common YT, Redstart, Chestnut-sided, BT Blue and BT Green and
Magnolia) and Red-eyed Vireo.
And just to top off the day a real highlight was the Canadian Snowbirds
doing a flyby of 8 jets past the hawkwatch! (practising for this weekends
big airshow in London).
Predictions:
Winds are predicted to start from the E and swing to the SE...our worst
wind direction for any kind of decent flight. Still, there will be birds on
the move under lots of sunshine and dryer air...but they'll likely be
passing through much further inland.
