Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Dustin Brewer
Observers: Andrew Sturgess, John Elliott, Patrick Mulawa,
Rosemary Brady
Visitors:
We had a nice group of people to pass the day with today, including a
visitor from Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch and a couple of young boys
interested in seeing birds!
Weather:
Until around 11 there were basically no winds at the count site, though
after 11 winds were consistently between 10 and 15 km/hr, and from the
north and east. The view of Canada was hazy the whole day, which indicates
a slightly hampered visibility. Cloud cover came and went throughout the
day, ranging between 1 and 90 percent. The barometric pressure was at 30.11
all day.
Raptor Observations:
Raptors were slow to start migrating today. By 9 we only had recorded one
bird, a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Throughout the late morning and early afternoon
Sharpies and Broad-winged Hawks started moving, but both were at low
numbers relative to previous days this season. We had our best Turkey
Vulture day of the season, so it may not be long before they start coming
over in large numbers. We were lucky enough to watch the Bald Eagles play,
and vocalize (a series of high pitched whistles, which some people would
call wimpy-sounding).
Non-raptor Observations:
We had even more Blue Jays today than yesterday, with 7,193 counted.
Because they are counted secondarily, and many were likely missed while we
were counting raptors, there very well could have been about 10,000 that
flew over the site today in impressive flocks. Monarchs were also flying
today, but in lesser numbers than previous days. We counted 220 Red-winged
Blackbirds bounding along this morning.
Predictions:
Tomorrow is predicted to be sunny with winds from the Northeast, so
hopefully some nice kettles of Broad-winged Hawks will be blown over the
count site!
