But our luck would soon run out. For the first couple hours, light sprinkles to moderate rainfalls were occurring off and on, but never stayed too long. At about 11:45, the rain picked up and the count was paused for about 45 minutes to wait out the rain. Unfortunately, only managed to count for another 15 minutes before the rain kicked back up again at about 12:45. I gave one last shot at counting when the rain cleared at 13:45; it lasted about 30 minutes and started back up again, and after waiting another 30 minutes without the rain clearing up I decided to call it a day. Raptor Observations: Ended the day with 23 raptors seen, most of which were Sharp-shinned Hawks, but also a Bald Eagle, 3 Northern Harriers, and one of each Falcon species were also seen. Non-raptor Observations: Surprisingly a good day for non-raptors! One of the highest days diversity-wise yet this spring, this included 100 species of waterfowl, 2 flycatchers, 4 different swallows, 12 warbler species, and 3 sparrow species. Highlights include a late Bank Swallow, Orange-crowned Warbler, good numbers of both Nashville, and Black-throated Green Warblers, 2 Northern Parulas, a late Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and two late fly-over Bobolinks. Easterly winds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
