Visitors:
A huge thanks to everyone on the observation knoll today who helped spot
and count the birds. Lots of visitors today and they were treated to some
nice kettles of TVs and buteos.
Weather:
Well it looked good to start with a mix of sun and cloud and light NW
winds. Unfortunately, a streamer of moisture pushed down from Lake Huron
right into the hawkwatch area with heavy overcast and a few drips and the
flight slowed down quite a bit. Temp was much cooler starting at 7C and
getting to a high of just 15C. Winds hung in from the NW and NNW and
strengthened as the day wore on.
Raptor Observations:
Despite the weather being problematic the flight was very good with 3,219
birds of 11 different species. The bulk of today's flight was TVs (2,543)
and Sharpies (452) along with a single Osprey, Bald Eagles (3), a nice
count of N. Harriers (43) including 4 males, our first decent count of
Cooper's (20) and Red-shoulders (25)... Redtails (61) and Am. Kestrels
(64), Merlin (6) and a lone high flying adult Peregrine.
Non-raptor Observations:
With all the Sharpies cruising through the Blue Jays pretty much were
non-existent with just the odd one sneaking along through the trees. On the
other hand there were several woodpeckers that were spotted crossing the
field to the west including several N. Flickers and Red-bellied Woodpeckers
and a YB Sapsucker...while in the woods were Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers.
Both RC and GC Kinglets continue to be seen in good numbers as are the
Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) warblers. Other warblers...Nashville and BT Green.
Both WB and RB Nuthatches and a single Brown Creeper, Eastern Bluebirds,
Am. Robin and Blue-headed Vireo.
A tight group of 5 Loons headed out to the lake were likely Red-throated
though they were too distant to get a positive ID on them.
Surprisingly, another 4 Monarchs were observed crossing the field and down
to the lakeshore and on westward today.
Predictions:
The forecast for Monday is light and variable winds which is our worst for
good flights.
