Johannes, from Ann Arbor, spent the afternoon with us and assisted with spotting. Weather: Skies were mostly cloudy all day. Winds from the south seemed light at the count site, but were stronger over the lake, which we could see from distant waves and hawks "fighting" the wind as they migrated over the lake. Because of these stronger south winds, most migrants were seen north of the count site - some quite distant. Raptor Observations: The first two hours of the day were quite slow for raptors, but as winds picked up a bit Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures started to move, and continued to trickle to the end of the day. Turkey Vulture counting was challenging, as most were north of the site and tended to be low - below trees and homes as seen from the count site. Total for TV's was 1387, Sharp-shinned total was 117. Red-tailed Hawks, Harriers, Bald Eagles, Red-shouldered Hawks, and a single Cooper's Hawk, Merlin, and Kestrel rounded out the day. Non-raptor Observations: During the morning hours Red-winged Blackbirds moved through in a few big flocks, with 500+ birds. Blue Jays also continued throughout the day, with 1500+ during the morning. Also, a few line of waterfowl were seen over Lake Erie - quite distant - of at least a thousand birds. Predictions: Tomorrow's weather will be mostly sunny, with winds from the south. Migration may be similar to today, with birds north of the site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
