Weather: There was a red sky this morning, which apparently caused the raptors to 'take warning,' as the old saying goes. When it wasn't raining, we counted few raptors (and when it was raining, we didn't count at all). As the storm system moved in, the wind shifted so that it had a westerly component. That westerly component was maintained after the storm passed. Raptor Observations: We only documented 14 Sharpies, 42 distant Turkey Vultures, an American Kestrel, and a Northern Harrier migrating today. A non-migratory Bald Eagle, Merlin, Cooper's Hawk, and Osprey were also observed. The approaching storm system seemed to deter movement, and after it passed through only one Sharp-shinned Hawk was counted, which apparently really wanted to get where to it was going. Non-raptor Observations: Over 2300 Red-winged Blackbirds and 270 Blue Jays flew over today, as did several large groups of European Starlings. The sky was still swimming with Tree Swallows making their gurgle-like vocalizations. Predictions: Tomorrow is predicted to be cloudy, with a chance of rain. Maybe the birds that didn't fly today will fly overhead tomorrow. The southerly wind may guide soaring birds north of the count site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch (greg_norw...@fws.gov) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
