Highlights of reports received October 27 through November 4 from the Niagara Frontier Region. October 29, a SABINE'S GULL among over 100 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at the source of the Niagara River in Buffalo. The gull was viewed from the Erie Basin Marina tower, as it passed the Bird Island Pier, LaSalle Park and the Buffalo river. Also at the Bird Island Pier, 15 SURF SCOTERS and numbers of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and BLACK SCOTERS. First reports of the season this week - ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Dunkirk Airport in Chautauqua County, five TUNDRA SWANS on Lake Ontario at Johnson Creek in Orleans County. And, SNOW BUNTINGS infiltrating the Lake Ontario Plains in Orleans County - small numbers on October 29, increased to hundreds on November 3. Unexpected, 6 reported SNOW BUNTINGS in Cheektowaga, by the Buffalo Airport. The broad migration of shorebirds continues. At the Meadville Marsh in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, two WHITE-R. SANDPIPERS with numbers of KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and DUNLIN. Nearby at Griswold Road and Route 77, a single GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and at Kumpf Marsh in the Iroquois Refuge, two WILSON'S SNIPE, plus three SANDHILL CRANES. And by the Allenburg Bog, in the Cattaraugus County Town of Napoli, 22 WILD TURKEYS and flocks of DARK-EYED JUNCOS. There will be a BOS meeting this Wednesday, November 9, at 7 PM at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Member Gerry Rising will present the program "Cats, Birds and Us".
