John and Chris C. came up the tower for a little visit with Mike W. and I. Weather: Surprisingly better day than previous, despite keeping the poor winds. The air was warm in the sun! Raptor Observations: Only one hour went birdless today, and it was the first hour! I had been expecting another day like the previous, so when I spotted the first raptor, I jumped up to get the scope on it! You've never seen someone so excited to get on a Sharp-shinned Hawk! The second hour went surprisingly well, with the first 4 birds of the day (the fourth being a nice Sub Golden Eagle at 10:55am), we had already started counting down to get to the double digits! It took until about 1:30 for us to get there, and only one more raptor after it! Non-raptor Observations: The non-raptor excitement of the day was shortly after arrival. A large group of roughly 1500 Aythya ducks flying in from the NNW! As the came closer, it seemed the majority was Ring-necked Ducks. 88 Horned Larks, 8 American Pipits, 61 Cedar Waxwings, and 53 American Goldfinches migrated over.
